Joshimath - Adi Shankaracharya’s Pitha

Joshimath also known as Jyotirmath is a sacred place for Hindu religion and is situated in Chamoli District in Uttrakhand. Joshimath features four pīthas which were established by Adi Shankara. Jyotirmath is one of the four institutions of Adi Shankara and is in a form of monastery. The four other mathas are situated at Shringeri, Puri and Dawarka. The heads at these mathas are titled as ‘Shankaracharya’. The Joshimath is in charge of Atharvaveda.  Jyotirmath became inactive during the 19th century. Jyotirmath started treating heads of other mathas as their formal job. This process was carried when Brahmanand Saraswati became the head from 1941 to 1953. There are many questions raised over the succession to the headships at Jyotirmath. The current head at Jyotirmath is Swarupa Saraswati. He is also the head at Dawarka Pitha.
