Gaurikund and its Legends

Gaurikund is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindu religion, on the route to Kedarnath. Situated at an altitude of 6000 feet, Gaurikund is 9 miles away from Kedarnath. Kedarnath is a sacred site to Hindus and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Gaurikund is associated with Lord Shiva’s wife Parvati. Mata Parvati is also known as Gauri in several parts of the country. According to the legends, Gauri performed many yogi practices to attain Lord Shiva‘s affection. Gaurikund is believed to be the place where Mata Parvati performed these practices and the place where Lord Shiva finally admitted his love for Gauri. The marriage ceremony was held at Triyuginarayan. Gaurikund also features a hot water spring which is now covered for serving as bathing area to ladies.

Gaurikund is also associated with the myth of how Lord Ganesha acquired elephant head. Mata Parvati was bathing at Gaurikund and Lord Ganesha was made to stand at the entrance and was told not to allow anyone inside. Lord Shiva arrived at the gate and tried to come in. Lord Shiva was refused to enter the house and out of anger he cut-off Ganesha’s head. Knowing the incident Mata Parvati was inconsolable and forced Lord Shiva to bring back their son’s life. Lord Shiva wandered places and at found an elephant’s head and placed it on Lord Ganesha’s body. Lord Ganesha was back alive and is known in thisform since then.
